Quick Onion Chutney – For Crispy Dosa and Soft Idlies!

Every week day mornings, we keep wondering what to do make for breakfast and dinner, so it becomes easier for all the working moms out there, like me, to prepare and store idli and dosa batter. But, then the next question arises, what to make for the dosa or the idli?

Well here is a simple side dish recipe that goes well with both the crispy dosa and the soft idlies. The first chutney in the chutney series, the Onion chutney or the red chutney or most commonly called as the Kara chutney is a quick breakfast fix.

Ingredients:

Oil – 3 tbsp

Urad dhal – 1/2 tsp

Gram dhal – 1 tsp

Onion – 3 nos

Tomato – 2no

Red chillies – 5 nos

Coriander Leaves – 8-10 nos

Salt – to taste

Tamarind – 1 tbsp

The Method:

  • In a pan, add 3 tbsp of OIL
  • Once the oil is heated, add
    • 1/2 tsp of Urad Dhal
    • 1 tsp of Gram dhal
  • Roast till the dhal turns slightly brown.
  • To that, add 3nos of roughly chopped ONIONS and sauté well till the onions turn translucent.
  • Add 5 nos of DRY RED CHILIES and 2 nos of Roughly Chopped TOMATOES.
  • Sauté till the tomatoes turn mushy.
  • Add a few (8-10) strands of Fresh CORIANDER LEAVES. This step is optional, but the coriander leaves adds a lot of flavor to the chutney.
  • Cook for 2-3 minutes and take it off heat.
  • Add 1 tbsp of TAMARIND and SALT to taste.
  • Allow it to cool completely and grind to a smooth paste.
  • Quick and easy ONION CHUTNEY is ready! Enjoy with Crispy dosa and Soft Idlies!!
